Lesson 15.. The Name of Jesus Part III
Signs and Wonders Follow... (The GOSPEL Preached - in HIS NAME)
Last lesson we covered the significance of a name, specifically JESUS' NAME.
This study will be about the first recorded miracle in the Act of the Apostles.
Let's begin in Mark, chapter 16, just prior to Jesus' ascension:
15. - And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16. - He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17. - And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18. - They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. 19. - So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. 20. - And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. ..... KJV
Jesus had been given authority over ALL things in heaven
and earth.(Mt 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto
them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.)
Then to whom did He give that authority? And by what means is that authority
to be used?
He told them to go and preach the Gospel in all the world and that in His Name signs and wonders would follow that preaching. Jesus promised He would send the Holy Spirit to dwell in them to give them power to be witnesses in His Name. On the day of Pentecost that was fulfilled.
At the time of the Pentecost event, many came to believe and in the following days many were saved and added to the church. So we can safely assume that word had been spread far and wide about this new church of believers and their repentance and baptism in the Name of Jesus. So powerful was the working of the Holy Spirit that some were even selling all their possessions and sharing them with others in common. The movement was a monumental one at that time.
Now let's go to Acts 3.
1 Now Peter and John went up
together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour.
You see, Peter was walking in the power and authority that had been given to him by Jesus. Jesus had commanded them to go and preach the good news, in HIS NAME, and then sent the Holy Spirit to enable him to do these miracles in HIS Name. Peter had no inherent power himself, only what had been given to him. Before Jesus ascended, for the most part it had been Jesus who had performed these miracles. But now, with the direct command given and the power within him, Peter had the authority to carry out that command. Actually, Jesus had stated that those who believe would do these things ... do you believe? Are you a believer? (And these signs shall follow them that believe) Consider that.
There is so very much that happened here, even more than the healing of the lame man.
The religious leaders were disturbed at all this. They had rejected Jesus and now miracles were taking place and many Jewish people were believing the Gospel and joining with the other believers. So they threw Peter and John into jail and then questioned them. But not until after Peter had preached the Gospel in its entirety just following the healing of the lame man.
11 And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering. 12 And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? 13 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go. 14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; 15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. 16 And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. 17 And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers. 18 But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled. 19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; 20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: 21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began 22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. 23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people. 24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. 25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. 26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
In fact, the scripture states that many who had heard that word were saved, about 5,000. The reason that the religious leaders were up in arms was the issue of the authority and in whose name Peter and John had done these things. So they brought them before the elders, scribes, priests, and high priests in Jerusalem. This was a serious and threatening gathering of formidable leaders who had the power to do harm to the Apostles! This was their question: '... And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this? ' They were afraid because they could not deny the power that had been wrought in Jesus' Name!
Peter's answer: 10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. The leaders had to discuss this, because they could not refute the fact that this healed man was known and the miracle was indeed real, and they then commanded Peter and John not to teach and preach in Jesus' Name.
16 Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. 17 But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. 18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. 20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. 21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.
The religious leaders were well aware of the significance of a name and preaching and teaching in the authority of a name. It was a well understood principle in their culture and religion. During the proclamation of truth that followed the healing that had been done in Jesus' Name, Peter called Jesus by these names:
These were names reserved for Messiah! Could it be that the priests and other leaders were having second thoughts about who Jesus really was? And that's why they were so afraid of the results of the apostles preaching in the Name of Jesus? They arrested them again shortly thereafter, reminding them that they had been ordered NOT to preach in the Name of Jesus again. This time, however, an angel rescued them and Peter and John went right into the temple to preach "the words of this life." at the angel's bidding! Again, they were commanded NOT to preach in Jesus' Name! But, the power in that Name to preach the Gospel was unquenchable!
And in the light of the threatenings, they had prayed ... " ... And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, 30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus."
Later, Gamaliel, a Pharisee, convinced the council that they should take care what they did to these men, for if what they were doing was of God, they'd need to leave them alone, and if it was not of God, then it would pass. So they flogged them and ordered them again not to preach in the Name of Jesus and let them go. And I LOVE what they did as they were leaving ... The Word says that they went on their way rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His Name! And the very next verse says: "And every day in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ!" NAS ... Notice they were STILL preaching and teaching in the temple!! As well as from house to house! Can you imagine the frustration of the council of leaders! What a demonstration of the Power of Jesus' Name!
When the Gospel is preached, it is preached in The Name of Jesus! There's power that accompanies that Name! There's power in all that is done in Jesus' Name! All that He is, All the He has done, All that He will do, All that He commands, in ALL things that glorify the Father!
