To Hell and Back

Rev. 20:11-15 Text Verse: "And death, and hell (Hades) were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death."

Introduction:

There are a lot of preachers in America who would never mention the word hell from the pulpit, but use it quite often in expressing themselves in conversation out of the pulpit. Someone has said if we had more hell preached from the pulpit we would have a lot less hell in the pew. Paul Harvey once said, "The difference in Northern Baptists and Southern Baptists, is the Northern Baptists say, "They aint no hell, and Southern Baptist say, the hell there aint." Either there is a hell or you cannot take the word of Jesus seriously, and you will have to tear a lot of pages out of your Bible.

Here in the 20th Chapter of Revelation, we see after the final Judgment of Christ, rejecting sinners cast into hell. This is the Great White Throne judgment, no saved sinners will be judged at the judgment. Saved sinners will have been judged at the judgment seat of Christ, not to determine their destiny, but rather their rewards ..

TO HELL AND BACK I remember reading an add in a newspaper many years ago about a movie with this title. I did not see the movie. Maybe you attend the theaters. Eva and I don't; once we got right with the Lord, the theater became off limits for us.

The scripture here speaks of the Lost who are in hell, coming back from hell to stand before the judgment bar of God and then they are going back to hell Let's see how and why this is taking place.

First. They are not coming back to determine where they are going to spend eternity. That was settled when they rejected Jesus Christ as the way of salvation. They are not in hell because of the deeds they did in there earthly life. They are in hell because they refused the only way of salvation. So if they are already in hell why are they coming back?

1. Their bodies are to be resurrected. Why? I believe we who are saved will recognize our love ones in heaven. I think the lost will be able to recognize their loves one in hell. So the lost are to be resurrected to receive their old bodies, bodies that will suffer the pains of hell for eternity, and yet not be consumed. Verse 5 and 6 says .... This is the first resurrection (those who reign with Christ for the thousand years) Blessed (happy) and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection; ( the rapture) on such the second death hath no power, but they (we)shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with him a thousand years. (In our glorified bodies)

Now read Verse 14: "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death"

2. To judge their works. Verse 13 ".. and they were judged every man according to their works." The lost man's so called good works will even be a work of sin. Why? Because he/she thought they could miss hell by their good works, rather than coming to Jesus Christ in repentance. Paul describes it in the 10th chapter of Romans as those who go about establishing their own righteousness and not submitting themselves to the righteousness of God.

Here is a truth we need to face: When a person dies, his influence, his works do not die with him. A Godly parent, living for the Lord will not only influence his or her children, but others as well. No person is an island unto themselves.

I have books on my shelves written by others who have been with the Lord for may years. What a blessings some of these have been to me over the years. No doubt that my preaching and writing have been influenced by what I have read.

But think of the lost standing at the Great White Throne Judgment to have their works judged. Their works did not die when they died. Think of Carl Marx, so called the author of Atheist Communism. Think of the millions that are in hell because they followed his teachings. Think of the preachers that deny the virgin birth of Jesus, His resurrection, and Jesus being the only way to heaven, and leading others to believe like him. On and on we could go. You get the picture. Man's works will follow after him till the last day when the books are opened. The lost will receive their just reward for his works, and be cast into the lake of fire. FROM HELL AND NOW BACK TO HELL.

Conclusion. I have good news for you reader. You don't have to go to hell. If you have not come to Christ for salvation, you can come to Him now. Read in your bible Rom. 10: 9-10 and verse 13. Hell was not prepared for mankind, but for the devil and his angels. But the person who rejects Christ will go there. John 3:18 "He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God'. .

Amen and Amen
